Riots †Big Brother Isn’t Watching You Essay Sample free essay sample

â€Å"A natural state or disruptive perturbation created by a big figure of people† . this is one of the many definitions available when you search for the word â€Å"Riot† . Some definitions province that the commotion is created because a group of people have a common intent. What is general through all of these definitions is that words like noisy. violent. incendiarism. upset and perturbation all reoccure. If people have a common end for desiring to cast visible radiation on something. so how come they find it necessary to utilize force to acquire their beliefs across? Isn’t that a spot old fashioned and caveman-ish? In August last twelvemonth. London suffered through a great trade of public violences. they were all over the metropolis. and they gained a batch of attending from the remainder of the universe. London is normally a really civil topographic point. and people frequently think of the English niceness. We will write a custom essay sample on Riots – Big Brother Isn’t Watching You Essay Sample or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page this nevertheless did non suit into the image of the English gentlemen. Shops were destroyed. things were lit on fire and some people even died. The inquiry is ; why did this hold to go on? In the article â€Å"Big brother isn’t watching you† the writer. Russel Brand. presents the thought that it all might hold been a response to the unfair violent death of a immature adult male. by a police officer. The immature adult male whose name was Mark Duggan. was besides a black adult male. this created a whole new degree of contention to the mix. Be it a mark of the London police’s hatred of black people? Had such an racialist act truly taken topographic point right under peoples olfactory organs? It’s difficult to state whether or non the offense truly merely was a error. or there were some implicit in racialist feelings behind it. the instance hasn’t even been closed yet. No affair the reply to this it was plenty to illume fire to a heap of dried out subdivisions. who were merely waiting to be used. It’s non the first clip London has experienced jobs with the different cultural groups. an issue which had been suppressed for some clip. the decease of Mark Duggan acted as a kind of accelerator for people to take up the battle they had been waiting for. If you plus this with the youths’ general contempt for the constabulary force. you’ve got a re asonably solid base for a public violence. The ‘fore mentioned contempt. is besides one of the topics in Russel brands’ article. He explains how he besides was attracted to the anarchist manner of thought and their dark image. To him it was a manner to make full a null inside him. and I think for a batch of people it is. You get to belong someplace and you have a end and a purpose all of a sudden. Life must look easy ; you know who the good cats are and who the bad cats are. Politicians are bad people ; the constabulary are power hungry. headless imbeciles who love to demo their high quality. I believe that people are entitled to believe what they want. I’d instead non that people were racist or sexist. but it’s truly difficult to alter peoples’ heads. I do nevertheless mind when people are violent. And that is the existent job with these public violences. Some of these immature nihilists are contending for a cause they believe in. and in comes person who merely feels angry and wants to make harm. I think it’s apprehensible that some immature people feel that they need to make full the nothingness indoors. it is in some ways a really easy clip to be a immature individual. partic ularly in a reasonably privileged topographic point like England. but in other ways it’s truly hard. When the immature people have finished their instruction. there aren’t any occupations waiting for them. But it’s non in any manner wholly right to travel around nailing Windowss. puting things on fire and crushing up others. Unfortunately these sort of public violences. that start out as presentations. pull all the worst sorts of people. like moths to a fire. We saw the same thing when the immature people of Denmark demonstrated to maintain their ungdomshus. violent people flew in from all over the universe under the camouflage of being militants. Alternatively of experiencing compassionate with the immature people. people began to fear them and believe that they were the existent job. It’s tragic that this is the manner it goes. and there are many more cases when this has happened. Cause it’s non merely the non-violent militant. the constabulary. the people of the state and the store and auto proprietors that suffer when a public violence takes topographic point. it’s besides the cause behind it. Peoples forget why they’re combat. and the public violence begins to take the headlines. alternatively of what was truly of import. It seems as though public violences are inevitable. they are rarely but they appear. Until we learn to understand each other to the full. without holding to fall back to force. they will likely still be here. One thing we can make. is to seek to learn immature childs the importance of being pacificists and that force is non the reply. that manner we can possibly be pro-active. One thing I think is truly of import is that we do non bury to clap those who create a truly successful presentation. one that really changes the position of things. So maintain on contending with words non arms. and delight go forth the guiltless people. and their properties. entirely. otherwise people might hold to show against you and so we’ve got a neer stoping rhythm.

Palenque Aqueduct Systems - Ancient Maya Water Control

Palenque Aqueduct Systems - Ancient Maya Water Control Palenque is a famous Classic Maya archaeological site located in the lush tropical forest at the foothills of the Chiapas highlands of Mexico. It is perhaps best known for the lovely architecture of its royal palace and temples, as well as for being the site of the tomb of Palenques most important ruler, king Pakal the Great (ruled A.D. 615-683), discovered in 1952 by the Mexican archaeologist Alberto Ruz Luhillier. A casual visitor at Palenque today always notices the rushing mountain stream nearby, but that is just a hint that Palenque has one of the best preserved and sophisticated systems of underground water control in the Maya region. Palenque Aqueducts Palenque is located on a narrow limestone shelf about 150 meters (500 feet) above the plains of Tabasco. The high escarpment was an excellent defensive position, important in Classic times when warfare was increasingly frequent; but it also a place with many natural springs. Nine separate watercourses arising from 56 recorded mountain springs bring water into the city. Palenque is called the land where the waters flow out of the mountains in the Popol Vuh, and the presence of constant water even in times of drought was very attractive to its residents. However, with so many streams within a limited shelf area, there isnt a lot of space to put houses and temples. And, according to the archaeologist A.P. Maudsley who worked at Palenque between 1889-1902 when the aqueducts had long since stopped functioning, the water level rose and flooded the plaza and residential areas even in the dry season. So, during the Classic period, the Maya responded to the conditions by constructing a unique water control system, channeling the water beneath plazas, thereby reducing floods and erosion, and increasing living space all at the same time. Palenques Water Control The water control system at Palenque includes aqueducts, bridges, dams, drains, walled channels, and pools; much of it recently discovered as a result of three years of intensive archaeological survey called the Palenque Mapping Project, led by American archaeologist Edwin Barnhart. Although water control was a characteristic of most Maya sites, Palenques system is unique: other Maya sites worked to keep water stored during the dry season; Palenque worked to harness the water by constructing elaborate subterranean aqueducts that guided the stream beneath the plaza floors. The Palace Aqueduct Todays visitor entering the archaeological area of Palenque from its north side is guided on a path that leads her from the main entrance to the central plaza, the heart of this Classic Maya site. The main aqueduct built by the Maya to channel the water of the Otulum River runs through this plaza and a length of it has been exposed, a result of the collapse of its vault. A visitor walking down from the Cross Group, on the hilly southeastern side of the plaza, and toward the Palace, will have the opportunity to admire the stonework of the aqueducts walled channel and, especially during the rainy season, to experience the roaring sound of the river flowing under her feet. Variances in building materials made researchers count at least four construction phases, with the earliest one probably contemporaneous to the construction of the Pakals Royal Palace. A Fountain at Palenque? Archaeologist Kirk French and colleagues (2010) have recorded evidence that the Maya not only knew about water control, they knew all about creating and controlling water pressure, the first evidence of prehispanic knowledge of this science. The spring-fed Piedras Bolas aqueduct has a subterranean channel of about 66 m (216 ft) in length. For most of that length, the channel measures 1.2x.8 m (4x2.6 ft) in cross-section, and it follows a topographic slope of about 5:100. Where the Piedras Bolas meets the plateau, there is an abrupt decrease in channel size to a much smaller section (20x20 cm or 7.8x7.8 in) and that pinched-in section runs for about 2 m (6.5 ft) before it reemerges in an adjacent channel. Assuming the channel was plastered when it was in use, even relatively small discharges could maintain a quite significant hydraulic head of nearly 6 m (3.25 ft). French and colleagues suggest that manufactured increase in water pressure may have had a number of different purposes, including maintaining a water supply during drought, but it is possible that there may well have been a fountain springing upward and outward in a display in Pakals city. Water Symbolism at Palenque The Otulum  River that runs from the hills south of the plaza was not only carefully managed by the ancient inhabitants of Palenque, but it was also part of the sacred symbolism used by the city rulers. The spring of the Otulum is in fact next to a temple whose inscriptions talk about rituals associated with this water source. The ancient Maya name of Palenque, known from many inscriptions, is Lakam-h which means great water. It is not a coincidence, then, that so much effort was put by its rulers in connecting their power to the sacred value of this natural resource. Before leaving the plaza and continuing toward the eastern portion of the site, the attention of the visitors is attracted to another element that symbolizes the ritual importance of the river. A huge carved stone with the image of an alligator is posed on the eastern side at the end of the aqueducts walled channel. Researchers link this symbol to the Maya belief that caimans, along with other amphibian creatures, were guardians of the continuous flow of water. At high water, this caiman sculpture would have appeared to have floated on the top of the water, an effect that still is seen today when the water is high. Fending Off Droughts Although American archaeologist Lisa Lucero has argued that a widespread drought may have caused great disruption at many Maya sites at the end of the 800s, French and colleagues think that when the drought came to Palenque, the below-ground aqueducts could have stored adequate amounts of water to keep the city sufficiently watered even during the severest droughts. After being channeled and running under the surface of the plaza, the water of the Otulum flows down the slope of the hill, forming cascades and beautiful water pools. One of the most famous of these spots is called The Queen Bath (Baà ±o de la Reina, in Spanish). Importance The Otulum aqueduct is not the only aqueduct in Palenque. At least other two sectors of the site have aqueducts and constructions related to water management. These are areas not open to the public and located almost 1 km away from the sites core. The history of the construction of the Otulums aqueduct in the main plaza of Palenque offers us a window into the functional and symbolic meaning of space for the ancient Maya. It also represents one of the most evocative places of this famous archaeological site. Sources Edited and updated by K. Kris Hirst French KD. 2007. Our Parents Affect Us Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Our Parents Affect Us - Essay Example His aunt who was a devout Christian raised Hughes; she encouraged him to attend church proceedings so that he could be saved. Hughes narrates how his aunt told him that extraordinary things would occur in his life after he gets saved. He attends the revival church service where his aunt Reed worshipped so that he could experience the unusual feeling. Prior to the service, his aunt had advised him that he would experience â€Å"something on the inside and he would see the light† Hughes was anxious about experiencing the everlasting light of Jesus Christ (Yagelski, Amy & Robert 224). He attended the church service with the expectation of seeing the light physically. However, this does not take place because he was waiting for Jesus to appear and encourage him to join the rest of the children on the altar. He is forced to join the rest of the children on the altar out of peer pressure. Deep down he thought salvation was something physical not an inside feeling. He pretends to hav e experienced salvation to please his aunt. The impact of the words of our parents can be massive. Parents are the adults children look up to. Therefore, anything they tell their children is assumed to be true. Even when the words or stories told present some gaps the children perceive the words of the adults as something not to be questioned. Hughes believed the words of his aunt and when the anticipated feeling did not occur he was afraid to question his aunt and opted to lie. Hughes experience in â€Å"salvation† is similar to many other experiences of children. Children tend to comprehend the words told by our parents plainly. They believe that something will happen for real and not through imagination. Parents do not know the children fathom things that way; therefore, they keep on telling them fantasy stories that they understand as being true. Most of the time, the words of our parents influence our decision-making. Even though children do not comprehend all that their parents say when they are young. They pretend to understand so that they may not disappoint their parents. This is why Hughes pretended to be saved - he wanted to make his aunt happy. Maxine Hong Kingston is another victim of the impact of parents in â€Å"No Name Woman†. The stories told by our parents are meant to nurture our growth and ensure we behave properly (Yagelski, Amy & Robert 87). Parents fail to understand the fantasy developed by children because of the story or narration. For instance, Kingston is a young Chinese woman approaching adolescence; the mother is afraid of the impact of adolescence that may befall Kingston. Kingston’s mother tells her a story to frighten her and ensure she respects traditional morals and ethics, but many things go through the daughter’s mind; she tries to imagine the possible ways that her aunt’s misfortune happened. Kingston develops an imagination of what might have happened to her aunt. She kept on wondering what led to the suicidal decision of her aunt. Children have the tendency of developing similar fantasies from the stories told by parents. They tend to fill the gaps not answered by parents. The imaginations are developed because the stories told by parents are not fully imaginative; therefore, the children develop their own fantasy world to fill the gaps. The imaginations can go as far as Kingston’s imaginations. She keeps on wondering if her aunt was miserable because of the

The Ethical Issues with Illegal Immigration in the U.S Research Paper

The Ethical Issues with Illegal Immigration in the U.S - Research Paper Example Amnesty would offer millions of immigrants a chance to seek their provisions. Forgiving their crime of coming here illegally can be beneficial as it can certainly restore the law. Providing illegal immigrants with amnesty would not necessarily be a self-burden to society. John Kerry brilliantly states his opinion as he states, "Absolutely. I supported and was prepared to vote for amnesty from 1986. And it is essential to have immigration reform. Anyone who has been in this country for five or six years, who's paid their taxes, who has stayed out of trouble, ought to be able to translate into an American citizenship immediately, not waiting."   Instead, it would give these individuals a chance to prove themselves in a competitive work environment. The true version of living the American dream can certainly become a reality for these individuals. Moreover, one cannot refute the fact that this country was based upon the foundation of immigrants coming from different spheres of the wor ld. America has been known as the â€Å"melting pot† of assimilation of cultures and has given new opportunities to immigrants throughout history. Another key reason why it is logical to legalize illegal immigrants is due to the fact that these immigrants are hard-working individuals striving to seek provisions for themselves and their families. Millions of these illegal immigrants are undoubtedly employed currently throughout the nation. Rounding and deporting these immigrants is clearly illogical as it is not feasible. John McCain in his 2005 speech clearly states, â€Å"It would be impossible to identify and round up all 10 to 11 million of the current undocumented, and if we did, it would ground our nation's economy to a halt.

The courts decisions over the last twenty-five years or so reveal a Essay

The courts decisions over the last twenty-five years or so reveal a remarkably confusing approach to the purpose of cross-examination under s.1(f)(ii) Criminal - Essay Example (ii) he has personally or by his advocate asked questions of the witnesses for the prosecution with a view to establish his own good character, or has given evidence of his good character, or the nature or conduct of the defence is such as to involve imputations on the character of the prosecutor or the witnesses for the prosecution; or the deceased victim of the alleged crime The intention of the Act was to ban the prosecution from cross examining a defendant on previous convictions, previous crimes they had committed and any evidence of bad character. The insertion of s1(f) (ii) removed the right not to be cross examined if the accused has attempted through his defence counsel to attack the character of the witness in order to diminish their evidence against him. This form of attack was frequently employed in rape cases where the defence would often resort to questioning the victim regarding their previous sexual experiences. According to Bohner et al (1998) part of the reason why rape is so infrequently reported is due to the ‘stereotypic beliefs about rape that blame the victim and exonerate the rapist’. It was always intended that the judge would have the discretionary power to refuse to allow the defendant to be cross examined on their previous convictions, but in reality this has very rarely happened1. Up until the recent introduction of the Criminal Justice Act 2003 bad character evidence of an accused was admissible only if the evidence could be regarded as similar fact evidence. This meant that the prosecution had to show that the defendant had committed similar crimes, using a similar method, in the past in order for these to be adduced in court. The impact of the 2003 Act has extended the similar fact requirement such that a propensity towards a particular offence can be adduced to demonstrate the guilt of the accused.

High Speed Internet Access Information Technology Essay

High Speed Internet Access Information Technology Essay Computer technologies have evolved new generation in the system of life. Almost in everywhere the computer technologies has been used for several purposes. Even the smallest organizations are depending on the computer technologies to operate most of their activities. One of the most important computer technologies is the computer networking, which provides many advantages. Nowadays, the computer networking becomes very useful to share the information easily. As you know , the computer networking are used in the active organizations, but lately even the small houses have got a home networks. Home network can be two or more computers are connected to each other to share some functions. Having a network are so useful for many reasons such as, hardware sharing. The users on network can use one hardware at the same time instead of using more than one. For example, if we have more than one computer at home we can use one printer base on our home network. Not only does a home net work provi de the ability to share resources found locally , but the fact that the home network can be connected to other networks. Most home networks, big or small, are also now connected to the global network which is the internet. A high-speed Internet connection is suitable in order to connect all computers on the home network to the Internet. There are many different types of internet connection. The three primary ways for home users to obtain a fast connection to the Internet are Digital Subscriber Loop (DSL), cable, and satellite. DSL is provided by telephone companies, cable is provided by cable TV companies, and satellite connections are provided by satellite TV providers. DSL shares the same phone line as the telephone service, but it uses a different part of the phone lines bandwidth. It does not interfere with normal phone service because there is a significant amount of unused capacity in current phone wires. Each has its advantages and disadvantages, including the minimum and maximum speed of Internet access, cost, and availability. I am going to make an active home network in our resident place ,which is located in Kuala Lumpur, Bukit Jalil , Savanna condo block A, 13th floor. This network will be used for many purposes such as using one internet subscription and one printer as well by more than one user. Besides that, I will take the advantages of transferring Data between the network users. As I am going to have a home network for six users or more, I have to pass through some steps. Firstly, I should know which types of internet connection are available and get the information about them. Secondly, according to the information that I will get, I am going to decide and choose one of the internet connections which has suitable costs and speed. Then I will apply to get the chosen connection. After that, I will choose the way to connect the users of the networks which rather will be wireless connecting and cables at the same time, which means I have to provide a wireless router and switch. Finally, as it is ment ioned above, I need to get a printer to be used by the all the network users. If we could make these steps done we will have a useful home network to achieve the particular purposes that I mentioned before, obviously after we implement it correctly. High Speed Internet Access: * Digital Subscriber Line (DSL):- The telephone system in this country has been around for more than a fifty years. And when you think about the actual physical infrastructure that make up the telephone system , you can see why it made sense and still makes sense to take advantage of the long distance of copper wire to connect computers at different sites. The telephone system is a switched network. This means that as a connection is established on the telephone systems network, it can be switched along different paths. For example, when you make a phone call, your voice communication does not necessarily move along the same route, even though you dial the same phone number when you call a particular person. As far as the transfer of data is concerned, the telephone system offers more than one possibility for moving information from source destination. This includes dial- up connection, dedicated lease line, and different switching technologies. One of the newest technologies for data transfer over the telephone system is Digital Subscriber Line. Digital Subscriber Line DSL is one of several popular broadband internet connectivity options. -Types of DSL: DSL stands for Digital Subscriber Line.   Your basic high-speed connection that shares space with your phone line. ADSL stands for Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line.   Has a slower upstream (upload speed) and a faster downstream (download speed).   Ideal for personal use like e-mail or surfing the Web. HDSL stands for High bit-rate DSL.   Has a modem on either end of one or more twisted pairs of wires that delivers T1 speeds.   This method requires two phone lines. IDSL stands for Integrated DSL.   IDSL combines ISDN transmission coding and ISDN channels on one circuit.   There are no dial up or per-call fees.   This is a better option for subscribers that may live too far for regular DSL. VDSL stands for Very high bit-rate DSL.   It offers the highest speeds in DSL connections right now.   At present, this method is only being used for limited commercial use.   DSL providers hope to make this form of DSL more common in the future. SDSL stands for Single Line DSL.   SDSL is symmetric, which means that information can be carried upstream and downstream at the same rate. How DSL works: DSL works with a twisted pair of copper wires, just like the kind that connects to your telephone from the telephone company. When you make a DSL connection, your normal phone line becomes the medium for all of your voice conversations and your Internet data requests.   Just like in a cable connection, the line is shared by the two connections and the information is kept separate, so that signals do not cross. The equipments that we need to get DSL connection: A modem (also known as a transceiver) on the subscribers side, this hooks up the computer to the phone line and processes all information and data. In more details, computers work with digital information, the digital data that is, the ones (1) and zeros (0) must be converted so that it can be carried by the analog phone line. This conversation from digital information to analog information is called modulation. When analog information is received on the modem connected to the destination computer, the data must be converted from analog back to digital. This process is called demodulation. You can see that the name for these devices, modem, is taken from modulation and demodulation. Access Multiplexer on the service providers side, stands for DSL Access Multiplexer and it takes requests from many customers and sends them into a single connection to the Internet. DSL filter a filter is sometimes used to separate the information coming from voice conversations and from the Internet.   All signals fewer than 4 KHz are voice signals, everything over 4 KHz is Internet data either being uploaded or downloaded.   The filter acts as a barrier so that signals never cross. Advantages and disadvantages of DSL: 1- Advantages of DSL: There are many advantages DSL such as:- DSL offers a fast connection. DSL allows you to use an open Internet connection and use your telephone line for phone calls at the same time. DSL speed is typically a lot faster than a traditional modem and doesnt require new wiring. Actually you can use the phone line that you have already installed in your home to get DSL up and running. You will be able to download and upload files faster. 2- Disadvantages of DSL: surely, there are disadvantages to anything as is the case with DSL:- The closer you are to the central office of the DSL provider the better your connection will work. For example, if your location is far away you may get more problems of connecting using DSL line. Typically connection speeds are faster when receiving information and data than when sending data using a DSL connection. DSL internet providers in KL: There are many available DSL service providers in KL: * TIME Broadband: Broadband Internet is high speed Internet access with speeds greater than 256Kbps. The attached table shows the comparison according to our needs of our home network. Service provider Speed Monthly costs Availability TM streamyx 2.0Mbps RM188 (with modem) Available in our building Giga broadband 2.0Mbps RM148 (with modem) Unavailable in our building As you can see in the table there is only choice, which is TM streamyx, because its the only available provider we can get in our building. Beside that, it is considered as the most known DSL provider in Malaysia. *Cable internet:- Cable Internet is one of the most used ways of having an internet connection. Cable broadband Internet allows you to have a connection that delivers considerably faster speeds than other types of internet connection without effecting with your ability to make and receive telephone calls. A lot of people prefer Cable Internet to other internet options, such as DSL, because it works the same wiring already used to provide cable television in their resident places. This typically makes installation easier and faster. According to the information mentioned, we can define cable internet as high speed Internet access through a cable line provides the customer with high speed data without using a telephone line. How cable internet works: Cable Internet works same as cable television works. Cable providers use a transportation of backbone optic wires to transfer television channels. These same lines are used to connect the user to the Internet. This is possible because each wire actually consists of multiple channels. Most of these channels are used for television transmission, but some are booked for data and information transfer. Those channels are used for accessing the Internet and separate ones are used for uploading and downloading. The speed, in part, depends upon the number of channels made available for users. The transmissions go to the cable providers local data center. This center is considered as the main port for all of the television and data transmissions for this particular area. From here, the transmissions will be sent out along the fiber optic lines to the Local Node Box. This box collects transmissions for all of the households in this particular area. Since you only have one wire getting cable into your home, it will need to be supplied so that one part can connect to your cable television receiver while the other goes into your cable modem. You will also need an Ethernet card if your computer does not already have one. When your cable modem receives the Internet transmission, it translates it into Ethernet data which will be converted by the Ethernet card into information your computer can understand. The process is also used when you send data from your computer to the Internet. http://www.internetservicedeals.com/faqs/cable-internet cable_setup2 (Author/ unknown, electricinternet.com, 2009) As a summary we can get cable internet connection if we have these equipments -Equipments that we need in order to have cable internet connection: TV cable (the main source). Supplier (to make the cable wire split into two parts, one connected to TV and another connected to cable modem). Cable modem (translate Internet transmission into Ethernet data). Ethernet card (convert the Ethernet data into understandable information). Advantages and disadvantages of cable internet: 1- Advantages of cable internet: Cable internet service is always working and you can watch your TV channels while you are connecting to the internet. It is much faster than dial-up service. Cable internet service can use the cable outlet you already have at your home or business. A Cable Modem is typically supplied to you by your Cable internet provider. The distance between you and your internet provider will not affect your internet speed. 2- Disadvantages of cable internet: Cable internet service is shared between you and other people on your network segment. Cable internet service is not symmetrical in that the upload (send) internet speed is slower than the download (receive) internet speed. Cable internet service is not available everywhere. -Cable internet Service providers: Cable internet service is not available in Malaysia. * Satellite: Satellite high speed internet service is a technology for getting high speed internet connection by using satellite dish connected to the orbiting system. Satellite internet service is one of always on service, this means we can access to internet without affecting on the telephone lines as well. So shortly we can define Satellite high speed internet service as a high speed internet connection to the global internet network by using satellite dish. -How satellite high speed internet service works : Actually, satellite high internet service is divided into two types:- One way satellite service / which must be provided with standard phone line to make the data traveling via this standard phone line obviously trough the phone modem. It is called one way service referring to that the upload speed is very low and the download speed is higher than upload speed. oneway (Author/ unknown, sinosathk.com, 2009) Two ways satellite service / Two-way satellite Internet service can provide both sending and receiving data from the remote very small aperture terminal (VSAT) site via satellite to a hub teleport, which then sends the data via the terrestrial Internet. The satellite dish at each location must be exactly pointed to avoid interference with other satellites. The attached picture gives more explanations. VSAT Star-shaped Networks Equipments that we need in order to have satellite internet connection: Approximately a two-foot by three-foot dish Two modems (uplink and downlink) Coaxial cables between dish and modem Advantages and disadvantages of satellite internet: Advantages of satellite internet connection : Satellite internet connection is faster than dial-up, it can provide up to 1.5Mbps. Satellite internet does not require a hard wired connection to the provider. Satellite internet is almost available anywhere, even in rural areas. Disadvantages of satellite internet connection: The upload speed is not as good as the download speed. Satellite connection is affected by inclement weather. The signals travel for long distance that causes some problems of delay known as latency, which causes problems when playing games online or when making internet phone calls. -Satellite Service providers in Malaysia: * SMART Company: There two satellite services provided by SMART: service availability available speeds approximate monthly cost Smart Ku band anywhere Up to 1512kbps Starts from 350RM per month Smart C band anywhere Up to 2Mbps Starts from 998RM per month (Author/ unknown, smartmalaysia.com, 2009) * Broadband over Power Line (BPL): Broadband over power line is a new technology that allows the users to access to the global network (internet) by plugging computers into any electrical outlet. This technology is almost similar to the other types of DSL in speed and costs. In short, the BPL is defined as a technology that allows Internet data to be transmitted over utility power lines. How BPL works: diagram (Author/ unknown, howstuffswork.com, 2007) BPL works by modulating high-frequency radio waves with the digital signals from the Internet. These radio waves will be fed into the utility grid at specific points. They travel via the wires and pass through the utility transformers to subscribers homes and businesses. Obviously, it needs some necessary modification to the utility grid to allow transmission of BPL. The purpose of using BPL is that the data can be transferred by bundling radio-frequency waves on the same line with a current electric line, so that, data can be transmitted without the need for a separate data line. Because the current electric power and radio waves are vibrated at different frequencies, the two dont interfere with each other. -Equipments that are needed in order to build up BPL connection: bpl1 (Author/ unknown, electricinternet.com, 2006) As you can see in the picture above, equipments are divided into two sections: -Equipments that the provider should install them (disappear to the user):- 1- router: supports the implementation and switches the customer access gateway. 2- Coaxial cable: connects the coupler and the gateway together. -Equipments that appear to the user:- 1- Electric outlet: the source of the power. 2- BPL Modem: makes the data understandable to the computer. -Advantages and disadvantages of BPL: 1- Advantages of BPL:- BPL connection is not affected by the long distance compared with other types of Broadband, as long as there is a power line, BPL can be installed. BPL is generally not limited by technical constraints. BPL is less costly to be deployed than cable and phone companies, because it does not require upgrading the current power lines. 2- Disadvantages of BPL:- BPL can affect to the other radio waves which have the same frequency rang. BPL unintentionally, send broadband signals as radio signals which make some troubles that affect on the radio signals receivers. BPL providers in Malaysia: *Relam BPL communication: BPL is still not implemented in Malaysia. It is still under testing. Soon this service will be launched. This poster has been scanned to show you the costs of this service after being implemented. user posted image(Author/unknown, www.et.net.my) -Comparison between all types of internet high speed connections: Referring to the information mentioned above, here is a table to summarize and recommend which one is more suitable to this particular home network. This table concentrates on the available types in the place that the particular network is going to be launched in (Savanna condo, block A, 13th floor). Name of the provider type speed Monthly subscription fees TM streamyx DSL 1.0 Mpbs 99 RM Smart Ku band Satellite 1.0 Mpbs 350 RM As it is clearly shown, the obvious suitable connection for this particular home network is TM Streamyx, because it has less costs and it is the most known provider in Malaysia as well. Wi-Fi technology: Computer networking is becoming more improved and much useful. Previously, the computer networking started with a traditional way of connecting the devices together by using wires. This way was just the beginning of this technical generation. Recently a new technology has been introduced which made a huge change in the computer networking. This technology is called wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi). Clearly, Wi-Fi technology has been used to give the users the freedom of being connected together without using any physical connectors. -Definition of Wi-Fi: (Wi-Fi is a wireless local area network technology that primarily provides short-rang wireless high speed data connection between mobile data devices and nearby Wi-Fi access point). (Author/ unknown, phonescoop.com, 2004) Description of the technologies involved: Wi-Fi is used for wireless local networking technology that uses 802.11standard. It comes as wireless router which is usually connected to DSL modem. This router transmit and receive the data by using radio frequency (RF) technology, this radio frequency goes through electromagnetic spectrum then it will be supplied to antenna which is usually Laptop or any device provided with Wi-Fi antenna. The wireless signal typically has a range of 300 feet. The connection speeds get slower as the distance the computer and the router increase. -Importance of Wi-Fi technology: Wi-Fi technology gives us much freedom of getting connected without any physical preclusion. It makes the networking much simple and easy, reliable. For example, the user of Wi-Fi networks can connect to the internet anywhere under the Wi-Fi coverage. Besides that, it makes transmitting the data faster compared to other types of wireless technologies. Wi-Fi implementation: There are many standards Wi-Fi technology but two of them are the most common nowadays, the first one is called 802.11b which provides a data transmission speed up to 11mbps, the other one is called 802.11g which provides a data transmission speed up to 54mbps. As it is mentioned the G one is faster, it is more popular and also support the B one devices so it will always be chosen for implementing Wi-Fi networks. Hardware that are needed in order to implement a Wi-Fi network: 1-ADSL modem: usually given by the internet service provider. 2-Wireless router (access point): usually comes with four RJ45 network ports.http://www.datapoint.com.mk/catalog/images/linksys%20wireless%20access%20point.jpg 3-Wireless adapter: in case if there is a computer desktop PC, this computer must have a wireless card to receive the Wi-Fi signal, there different type of Wireless adapter:- PCI card: means Peripheral Connect Interface, this is the name given to a type of port inside the pc, which enables the user to add thing such as network cards, modems, sounds cards. dlink_pci_dwl528 USB Wireless Dongle: any PC provided with USB ports can accept this type of wireless adapter. http://img.alibaba.com/photo/100641524/Wireless_USB_802_11g_Adapter_With_5_Dbi_Antenna.jpg Software: There is no specific software to implement Wi-Fi network. Wi-Fi router can be installed and configured by using any internet browser such as internet explorer. In the other hand, there is some software to manage Wi-Fi networks. It makes managing the network easy and controllable. Costs of implementing Wi-Fi technology: According to the hardware needed for implementing a Wi-Fi home network, the costs will be as it is shown in the attached table. hardware Price Linksys wireless router WRT54G2 168RM DSL modem Provided by Strymex Wireless adapter Linksys USB dongle 140RM So the total costs of implementing Wi-Fi technology is 308RM. *operational requirements of Wi-Fi technology: -Safety: Wi-Fi technology could be harmful to the human-being. The high frequency of radio signals could cause some kind of cancers. Referring to the studies that have been done, no one could prove the negative effects of the radio waves; no one could prove that the Wi-Fi technology is harmless as well. However, to be more secure, we should not allow the children to use laptop for long time. Also we should not use laptops on our laps especially when we use the laptops for long period. Security * Security mechanisms: There are several mechanisms to secure any Wi-Fi network each mechanism has its own concept:- 1-SSID: SSID is the short form of Service Set ID. In other word, it can be considered as the name of the network. The purpose of SSID is connecting the clients to the access point. SSID will be broadcasting to be seen by the clients. Each access point has a name. In case if there is more than one access point with the same SSID, it will be shown as one access point which has the strongest signal. In the other side, SSID can be hidden for more security by changing the settings of the broadcast to be unviewed so that the client must know the SSID. Unfortunately, hiding the SSAD does not mean that the SSID is really invisible; there are some programs to find out the hidden SSID such as NetStumbler. 2-WEP: is the short form of Wireless Equivalency Protocol. When the user set up Wi-Fi network, there will be two options of encryption, one is WEP and the other is WAP. WEP provides lower level of protection. It uses 64bit and 128bit encryption by using RC4 logarithm. WEP uses a secret encryption key to encode data packets before a network client or an access point transmits them, and it uses the same key to decode the packets after they have been received, it also prevents unauthorized access to the network, it performs an integrity check on each packet, and it protects the data from eavesdroppers. Generally, WEP encryption can be easily broken compared to WAP encryption. 3-WPA/WPA2: is the short form of Wireless Protected Area. It was created as a partial solution to the weakness of WEP encryption. WPA is much better than WEP but that does not mean it is completely protected.WPA can be cracked but not as easy as WEP. WPA is more secure because it uses a method called Temporal Key Integrity Protocol (TKIP) to automatically change the encryption key after a specified period of time or after the system exchanges a specific number of packets. Obviously, there is a question has been on your mind, how does WPA actually can secure the network? Well, WAP works in two different ways. First, in large networks, (WPA uses an authentication server to verify the identity of each network user. The server uses Remote Authentication Dial-in User Service (RADIUS) and the Extensible Authentication Protocol (EAP) to exchange encryption keys with the computers and other devices that are connected to the wireless network.) Second, ((in home networks and smaller business networks that do not have a server, A method called pre-shared key (PSK) mode uses a passphrase stored in the access point in place of the authentication server. To connect to the network, users must enter the same passphrase on their computers or other network devices (or set their devices to automatically enter the passphrase). When you set up WPA encryption, you must specify whether the network uses a server or PSK mode.)) (Author/ John Ross, The book of wireless, 2004) WPA2 is the recent version of WAP. They almost have the same concepts. There are some differences between WPA and WPA2. WPA Personal- Authentication method is PSK, Encryption Method is TKIP

peter shaffer :: essays research papers

Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã¢â‚¬Å"During the years of the so-called New Drama in Britain, critics became used, almost to the point of being blasà ©, to dramatists making sensational debuts† (Taylor 313). These dramatists (or playwrights) included John Osborne, Harold Pinter, Arnold Wesker, John Arden, and Peter Shaffer.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Peter Levin and his twin brother Anthony were born to Jake Reka and Fredman Shaffer in Liverpool, England on May 15, 1926. Anthony is also a playwright, who’s play Sleuth (1970), has had more performances than all of his brother’s plays combined. Nevertheless, Anthony, who has pursued law, advertising, and television, has not yet embraced the stage as his chief vocation (Smith 452).   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  In 1936 the Shaffer’s all moved to London. This is where Peter attended St. Paul’s School till he graduated in 1944. From 1944 to 1947, Peter worked in the Chrislet coalmine, having been enlisted as one of the â€Å"Bevin Boys,† essential workers in service to the country, organized by Ernest Bevin, Churchill’s Minister of Labor during the Second World War. Shaffer found coal mining an arduous occupation that he states, gave him a great sympathy for the way many people are forced to spend their lives (www.iub.edu).   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Shaffer then attended Trinity College in Cambridge, where he and Anthony co-edited the student magazine Grantha; he received a B.A. in History in 1950. â€Å"He began writing at Cambridge or shortly after; accounts differ as to whether he was writing and tearing up plays at that point, or writing and tearing up detective novels† (Taylor 313). Under the pseudonym Peter Anthony, Shaffer was able to pen The Woman in the Wardrobe, the first of his three detective novels. He co-authored the second and third – How Doth the Little Crocodile? (1952) and Withered Murder (1955) – with his brother, Anthony (www.iub.edu).   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  From 1951 to 1954, Shaffer lived in New York and worked a variety of jobs; at Doubleday’s Book Shop, an airline terminal, Grand Central Station, Lord and Taylors department store, and the New York Public Library. Shaffer states for years he labored under the impression that the passion he had developed for the theatre could only be used as a pastime and that his daily profession had to be something â€Å"respectable† (www.iub.edu). He found his job in the New York Public Library adequate but boring, but he continued to resist the urge to devote himself to playwriting until he returned to London. He was Bossey & Hawkes’s Music Publisher of Literary Critic of Truth for two years, and Music Critic of Time and Tide for another two years during the beginning of the 1960’s.

Free Essays on Brazilian Women In The Fashion Industry

In the late twentieth century women’s roles in the Brazilian fashion industry boomed. Many women have worked in the slums of Brazil and sewed clothes for some of the top designers and models. There are also women that work on the business side of the industry. These women own their own businesses, manage, import foreign goods, market, and sell the finished products. Together seamstresses and entrepreneurs in Brazil have made a name in the world of fashion. Starting in the 1980s seamstresses no longer had to work in the horrible conditions and for the low pay of the sweatshops. In 1981 Maria Theresa Leal opened a cooperative called the Cooparoca in Rocinha, a major slum in Brazil, after seeing how the women there had an interest in fashion (Downie). In the beginning textile companies donated extra cloth and materials to the Cooparoca at the request of Leal and the women began to work. They started out by making covers, cushions, and pompoms and selling them to family and friends. In 1987, the cooperative was registered and received grants from the United Nations Development Program and a government credit line (Downie). Leal provide sewing classes so that other women could begin a career of their own. Leal was now able to buy a nice place for the women to work in, which was very uncommon in these slums. The women work in a very unique environment in a spacious three-story building. Leal made sure the women were comfortable and treated with respect. She wanted the women to be happy at what they were doing. In 1994, Cooparoca’s designs were shown off at a Rio fashion show for the first time (Downie). The women really didn’t know what they were doing and all of the clothes were messed up. At the time deconstructionist designs were popular. The critics loved the Cooparoca’s designs because they thought they were trying to be deconstructionists. The editors of Vogue and Elle magazine were at Leal’s home the ne... Film Review for Macbeth essays

Film Review for Macbeth essays From start to finish the story of Macbeth proved to be a gripping, powerful, and very illustrious and graphic dipiction of an army general turned king going mad with power, as did the film we watched after finishing reading the play. Both the book and movie had their good, and bad parts or points. Some, actually many thing's between the two were the same. Some good points about the movie, that made it better in certain aspects then the book was that the movie was a lot easier to comprehend, this is probably due to the constant visual aid which a movie offers the viewer, as opposed to the book which gives you an occasional picture here and there, but this doesn't really help because ancient Elizabethan english is not, in my opinion easy to comprehend to an untrained ear. The book however does offer total, and complete explanations of every part of the play, total clarity, if you can understand it, to it's full extent. The movie provided a more exciting, and interesting approach t o studying shakespear, I think that it was a great way to end off our study of Macbeth in any event. But if I had to chose between the book and movie, I would definately, like most of the people I assume, chose the movie. The movie had everything you could have wanted, action, suspense, mystery, and at the same time, told the story of Macbeth pretty accurately. I really enjoyed this film, and this play as a whole. Macbeth has proved to be one of my more favoured Shakespearean plays, probably because of the fact that it was short, and to the point, with no beating around the bush, and plenty of gripping action along the way. This is definately a film I would watch again, even a play I would read again. I'll be perfectly honest, when we first got our Macbeth books, I immediately thought, "yes", sleep time for Nathan, but as we got more into the play I started to get more into it myself, actually paying attention. When we watched the film I actually ...

Finding meaning in Dorianne Laux's Dust Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Finding meaning in Dorianne Laux's Dust - Essay Example Hence, in association with the feeling afore mentioned, we will discuss the use of image of God to represent the poet’s inner muse, how the poet state the functioning of human’s mind and lastly the human nature of closing eyes to the truth and opportunities of life. There are numerous poets who use the imagery, specifically of God to imply certain angles of life and so is the case with Laux’s ‘Dust. She in her third last line â€Å"God comes to your window† uses the word God to portray the inner inspiration of hers. It is not God that she is talking about, but the muse that people have within themselves, but choose to ignore it as a result of being maybe unsuccessful in you previous days, conformity or just laziness. Furthermore, people might don’t agree with a specific content of religion such as sin, rewards, punishment, fate or destiny, but the word God does attract a large number of reader and audience as it can be also used in context of culture. Moving to the next idea that is the functioning of human’s mind, in the whole poem Laux has clearly indicated that the functioning of a human mind is very complex and obtrusive. She illustrates through the first few lines of her poem â€Å"Someone spoke to me last night, told me the truth. But I recognized it† tells us that there are moment in an human’s life that they are provided with the truth and it’s that truth which they know relates to them, and for which they try to search for their whole life, but the next phrases implies that when they are in hold of that reality, they do nothing of it. Furthermore, the poem also indicates that during the hardships of life, people usually forget what the truth and reality had been about even if they recognize it. They just remember that there is truth for them or a reality concerning them, but they don’t remember the essence of it. The last idea connects to the previous one and outlines an intriguing nature of human
